This is where everybody’s trip starts. These are the nuts and bolts. These are your building blocks.

Your language skills are the things you can do with language, regardless of the activity, regardless of your profession. Just regardless. Stuff like asking a question, discussing events in the past, or talking about possibilities. You know these by other names: grammar and vocabulary. You probably learnt some of it and then put it in some box and forgot about it.

But your efforts do not need to have been in vain. At native proficiency you will be able to remember what you learnt and learn more and better. Why should you do it? Because once you have consolidated your knowledge you will immediately put it to use, which is the reason your decided to learn, right?
